Post by Mickey0711 »

Hello Fellows,

Very good day to everybody, I am Mike, I’m a Design teacher of a local Design Academy.
I Have some new designs of Maxi Scooters from my students as their Graduation Work.
I will start a vote here to see which design is the most popular.
The design/designer gets the most votes will receive a new laptop as a bonus.

Please help to vote one time the design you will love to see or ride in the future.

You are free to leave comments and suggestions.

Thanks for you time and support!

A serious question, Mike

Has anyone explained the concept of maxi scooters to your designers in terms of practicality, luggage carrying, weather protection, long and short distance comfort?

All the designs look like race-derived motorcycles re-imagined as scooters.

Understand that I'm being kind here, not necessarily nice.

Welcome to the forum.

8-)

PS: In the interest of actually answering your question, D. The appeal is it looking stretched and stealthy.

Like a lot of non-engineering types you are confusing design with styling. Your images only show the latter. Design should put function first and as a general rule something that delivers functionality will often also achieve recognition as an iconic style in the public perception.

Sorry to sound negative but I suspect you have chosen a difficult audience here as maxi-muppets have very practical approach to the scooters they choose and appearance is probably quite low on their desirability list.

Two comments above explain far better than I could hope to, a sinking feeling I developed as I looked at each design/styling exercise. I ride a Honda Forza 350 because it has a large storage capacity, bodywork that protects me and, above all, a magnificent electrically adjustable screen to protect me further and make a ride physically more pleasant too. Stylish and likely very noisy sleek screens on the undoubtedly easy on the eye examples shown. Form follows function for me...

As mentioned above, these seem to be a styling exercise at best, there doesn’t seem to be much attention paid to actual engineering design or functionality

Also, not wishing to cast any aspersions, but I can’t help wondering if a bit of AI hasn’t been used to generate the images

Look at the front discs on C and D for example, and the swing arm on F blends directly into the frame/bodywork, the side stand is on the wrong side of the back wheel !

Sorry

It kind of depends on the engineering underneath! What power train is there, what drive mechanism, luggage space etc....the styling isn't the most important thing. So its tricky to pick one....

Hello Mickey,

Thank you for sharing with us and please continue to encourage your students.

However, I have to echo the comments above. I will pick from a spec sheet and reviews not your admittedly great renderings. I want

Mirrors that show what's behind me (or even cameras with a display)
Mudguards that actually guard against mud. The designs shown are seriously lacking anything to stop my jacket getting splattered from the rear wheel.
Materials that don't rot in a UK winter. Build things like Satnav and connectivity in, with a display, no more adding phone holders.
The ability to choose different positions to sit, this means the footboards run from behind me, feet under, to well ahead, feet forward.
Weather protection, electric screens are almost a must.
Luggage capacity
Low weight and seat height suitable for a 5'6" person with a 26-inch inside leg.
A 200 mile range
Easy access for maintenance.
Performance to cruise at 70 mph.

I'd really like an Engineer not a stylist to run the project please.

If the above means it looks like something drawn with a ruler, in bad light, while eating breakfast before the project meeting, regrettably that's what it'll have to look like.

Andy

I concur with everyone else, they all look like variations of the Honda ADV or Yamaha XMax, purely on looks however I think I'd go for D

Mike welcome and thanks for the post it caused some thought. But like others have said there is not enough information to make a decision based on anything but the looks and colour scheme. One thing you might have to take into consideration is that most people on here are older rather than younger, I'm 74 and after most of my life riding motorbikes I now ride a maxi scooter which has Heated seats and handlebar grips, electric screen and mirrors ( they fold in when your passing inbetween lines of traffic). Under the seat is 55 litres of storage which takes two full face helmets and a few other bits. The engine is a 650cc twin which means it cruises the motorways with ease, I have toured europe on 1300cc bikes but the scooter is the best motorway mile cruncher I've owned. These are the reasons I bought it.
It might have been better if you'd asked what we looked for in a scooter and given the students something to work with or maybe you did?
Having said all that based on the pictures I will vote for B as I like the chunky design and I really like the colour scheme so much so I started wondering if there were any panels on mine I could wrap :D

PS they get lap tops as prizes these days all I ever got was a book, it was a nice book though.
