Hartside Cafe burnt down.
There has been a serious fire at the Hartside Cafe today, the roof has gone so it's been a big one. Fortunately nobody has been hurt.

Great blast out for us Geordies, hope its fixed up for the summer, could be better as their is plenty room for expansion as toilets are inadequate for the amount of people in there when its busy, especially access for the old folk and wheelchair users who stop by on coach trips.

So where is this elusive establishment you refer to - another pie shop I assumeMeldrew wrote:I hardly ever stopped there when I lived in Cumbria, as better food was available in the village of Melmerby before the climb up to the top of Hartside.

Re: Hartside Cafe burnt down.
As noted above Hartside is at the top of the pass from Penrith to Alston. The road is challenging and the views spectacular.
It's popular with bikers, cyclists the car guys.
I'm hoping it will be back in action, but expect it will be a full rebuild.
Apparently the fire brigade needed a snowplough to get there! Oh the irony of having a fire during the worst snow for many a decade!

Thanks Meldrew. Just maybe I'll head that way this summer for a few days in my efforts to get some real miles on the bike!
