Near miss!

Post by x10350 »

Overtaking about a mile long Q of stationary traffic last night when a guy about 8 cars in front decided to do a U turn no signal no look in mirror no easing out. Thank god for ABS on my Piaggio X10.
Had my daughter on the back who got a bit of whiplash but other wise OK. I was only doing about 20 and fortunately had the brakes covered. A real emergency stop with no skidding. The Richard Cranium just carried on as if nothing had happened. Later on a car pulled out at a roundabout infront of us. I'm gonna get my hi viz vest out!

the bigger the que the more impatient cars get.. in daylight if its a long que put your high beams on as well, and more of a trundle leg down speed is advised, glad you both safe  i always wear my hi viz, and my sons too.. but they moan as they are older now  so i say walk home then  a lot of the time i tend to sit in the small traffic flow if two up... on the occasions i do filter its as above.. yet the amount of car drivers on phone/makeup/etc tends to tell me to not bother filtering most of time :D
I cant seem to remember.. I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way.

Glad you are OK.

Take care, I can think of several riders killed in exactly that situation including a well loved Muppet.
Hitting them is bad, glancing off into oncoming traffic doesn't bare thinking about.

Couldn't agree more. I don't often filter and, when I do, it's very slowly.
I don't ride a bike in order to get there quicker as, fortunately, I'm not usually in a hurry so don't need to.

Glad you both were ok. There's some right arseholes about.

I was riding in central london this morning and filtering on Euston Road. I hit a clear patch and was undertaken by a sports bike rider who felt I should have been riding faster in the heavy rain!!!!

Every day I wonder at the stupidity of other road users. My top hate are cyclists although motorcyclists come a close second for careless driving in some of the stunts they pull.

ps I was on the GP800 but missed the extra wheel of the MP3 this morning

If I only have one near-death experience on my commute into central London, I consider it a good day.

Ride cautiously, ATGATT, specify ABS and keep a careful eye on everything around. It's the only way. I've found with experience that I can predict reasonably well what any given vehicle, cycle or pedestrian nearby is about to do, but I always remain conscious (no pun intended) that someone somewhere WILL do the unpredictable.

Second the point about not trying to get somewhere fast: I simply aim to arrive. The journey takes as long as it takes.

They should make it law that every one should ride a bike for a year before getting behind the wheel of a car, every week i get a near miss mostly by women on the school run worst time of the day, had one last week pulled right out in front of me 40mph zone i had high viz on and lights on gave her a toot only to get 2 fingers out the window then back onto her mobile phone and they wonder why there is road rage.

And its not just when you are riding, I was in my car doing 70mph.When the car that was along way off,70 mph,you cover ground quick, just pulled from the hard shoulder,on to the lane I was in,[left lane]to go on to the M2 And I thought shit this is going to hurt.hit the horn, went over the angled white lines.Kicked loads of dirt/dust,i had no room in my lane, they must off heard me,becourse they stopped,i went past, and the car behind, that was some distance, thought that they had it.Didnt though.12.30 At night,no one around, just didn't look. :x
