I stopped at my in-laws to water their plants as they are on holiday. When I came back round to my scoot I could smell drains. fecking great I thought, I'm going to have to clear that or it'll solidify whilst they are away.
So I lift up the manhole cover and to my relief its clear. Strange thinks I? Back round to the scoot I go and can smell it again. Must be just the fields I think, as I sniff through his letter box and cant smell anything in the house. So off I go to get my petrol. I get to the garage and can smell the same smell again. Christ its me I think! 
Then I think, hmm eggy smell? Overcooked battery! Reg/rectifier! But it starts and I head for home and my multimeter. I get home and before I even undo the battery cover I can feel the heat from it. Sigh. Multimeter reads 25 volts... 
So I finally get the panels off and get to the reg/rec off. I start it up and check the voltage across the battery and it still 25 volts. So whilst its running I disconnect the battery and check the output, which is 25 volts. I check the disconnected battery and that's still 25 volts. WTF!
Fortunately being an Italian Bike Breakers, I go over to the Nexus which I know has a good battery. I check it with the meter and yes that reads fecking 25 volts. 
So I put a new battery in the meter and get 12.8 volts off the Nexus battery. Back over to the Liberty and start it up, slowly the voltage climbs to past 15.5 volys. I turn it off. Hang on, that reg/rectifier looks familiar. Regular readers of my column about broken Italian bike will remember my Nexus had the wrong reg/rectifier on it. Well guess what, yup you guessed it, it fits the Liberty and works!!!
I knew some good would come out of that bastard Nexus! 
Dont know if the severely over heated battery will survive but I'm hopeful...
even if you only get one bolt in it , well done mate
