Honda PCX

Post by Lazydaisy »

Hi there folks. Riding time coming round as spring is hopefully in the air and I reckon my beautiful Betsy Burger will be accompanying my other half to work rather than myself as the fuel prices head ever upward. I feel guilty using a car for work but the bicycle isn't a goer either so the thoughts have turned again to a smaller fuel economic scoot, had a look at the Honda PCX the other day and may go for a test ride in a day or so. Wondered what the general thoughts on this scoot are? Need something that will do more than 40mph, excellent mpg and light enough for easy moving around.
Hope all are well on here :D

I've had one since October 2010, it's a fine wee beastie around town and small country back-roads but totally hopeless on fast A-roads.
(it's restricted to 62.5mph)

Could include SWing 125 or SH125 too, depends whether you want greater comfort, storage, large wheels etc. By looking at scoots that have been available longer you'll be able to buy cheaper, they all fundamentally use the same engine.

For what it's worth if I was to have any 125 it would be the pcx. I love the styling. Saw one a while back and it appeared to take of from the lights. I think a 125 is too small a engine for a bulky maxi style chassis. The SH is ugly. The pcx is perfect for what it does. Get the white one :)

the pcx is a fine tool if just for commuting ,had one for work a while back. plus so light you can just pick the back up an turn the thing round rather than 3 or for 4 point turn..lol...but if you plan on useing for a few rides aswell from the scooters iv'e had , s-wing 125 would be my choice as bit more comfort an can go that little bit quicker for open road...plus better weather protection.

I'm looking for a small run around and test rode the PCX 125 last year. Excellent around town but 60 mph is max with wind buffering. I would consider the larger screen if I were doing 50-60 mph regularly.

The only thing that put me off was the 2500 mile service interval and the valves having to be checked every time. According to the workshop this is at least a 3 hour job at £60 ph as the rear plastics need removing etc. Maybe GN2 can enlighten on this point?

If you are buying new make sure you get the latest ESP model. The way you can tell is by the ESP logo on the air box.

Currently there is a dealer from Castleford on eBay selling new unused pre-reg models for £2195 including the new blue colour.

Another consideration is the Honda Vision 110. Will probably do 50 mph and is £1800 rrp, but again I found a dealer on Autotrader selling a new unused pre reg for only £1395 in the nice red colour.

Ta for all the info folks. Prob try a test ride this week as local dealer has a px in although I think the asking price is steep for its age. I'd be riding to and from work in max 40mph zones and then poss to Cambridge where the route is below 50mph most of the way but there's free motorcycle parking in town! I'd never take the Burger there as she's just too big & heavy to manoeuvre for me in tight spaces. If I wanted a long ride on the open road I'd use Betsy.

Depending on budget it sounds like a PCX would be fine, it is absolutely fantastic in town, it can slice through the worst traffic like a hot knife through butter.
Don't worry about differences between an eSP or the original, there's really nothing in it, the eSP only does a (very) few mpg more.
Valve check interval has been discussed a fair bit on a PCX forum I frequent, the general concensus seems to be that 5,000 mile checks are fine for everything other than keeping the warranty valid.
Which given my experience with fork tube corrosion isn't worth the paper it's written on...

Have you thought about a honda Innova 125 or the new wave 110? Both are step through cubs with four speed semi gearboxes. The Innova is capable of around 65/70mph. But returns well over 100mpg. Many owners report 120-140mpg. The newer wave is of smaller displacement but should be capable of 60mph and again returns good mpg.

Only problems I can see over an auto (ie PCX) is you have to change gears (not a prob is you don't mind). Weather protection not quite as good as a scooter. Tiny storage and fuel tanks - though they do massive mpg anyway.

I'm really after storage, need one with space for my handbag, gym gear etc! Also good mpg. Started out on a Suzuki U50 back in 1970 so remember that style of bike well, kick starting on a cold, snowy morning........
