Hello from Shepperton, Surrey

Post by outbound »

Hello All,
Just joined this great site today. For the last three months I have owned a 2000 Burgman 400. Before that I had a Chinese Sukida Viper 125cc. Although that was good with no problems, the fun and enjoyment I have had out of this old girl
has been wonderful. The Burgman had not been used since 2005 and only had 13,000 miles on it. I have done a few thing on it, fitted new tyres, had the wheels refurbished and done an oil change. Now just enjoying slowly cleaning little bits up at a time, although it's in very good condition for the year. I would like to do the belt in a few months, myself but I don't have the bottle just yet. Now looking forward to the summer for a few trips out.
I look forward to doing some posting sometime.

I'd do the belt sooner rather than later given that its a minimum of 7 years old. That will snap soon!

I started maxi-life on a '99 B400 and really enjoyed it, had no great issues apart from a decaying exhaust and rather poor initial mpg, which was rather surprisingly helped by a switch to a K&N air filter.

I'm guessing it helped correct a rich mixture, so although I'm not a great fan of "go faster" mods, you may want to consider spending a bit extra when the filter needs doing.

Welcome aboard. :)

Bit worried about what Mottza has said. Would like to do the belt myself and check rollers and do the gear oil. If I take it to a garage it would be quick, but I would also like to see how it was done for the future. If I am going to use the Burgman for longer summer runs and may be worth doing now, I can just about afford the belt not sure how much labour costs would be.

Whatever you do, don't buy any belt other than OEM, I tried a cheap Athena belt and it shredded within 1000 miles and left me stranded. Labour will not be cheap, certainly over £100.

Although I never did the belt myself it's not rocket science if you have decent tools, I believe the hardest thing is removing the main nut whilst holding the variator "locked". Checkout YouTube as there's "how to" videos on there to help give you confidence.

Do you own (or can you borrow) an impact gun?

The belt's due at 14000 if I recall, so you're not so far off anyway. Having said that, mine's on 24000 and no sign of changing rev/speed ratios, though I only pootle about mostly. Welcome!
I wake up every morning with a smile upon my face,
My natural exuberance spills out all over the place!

Its not just mileage, its also time as well.

The X9 had only done maybe 3-4000 miles on it last belt when I bought it, but it had been on there for 3-4 years, hence I replaced it. When the old one checked, it wasn't worn, but had started to crack.

Might want to stick a set of Dr Pulley sliders in there as well while you are at it.
