Tmax (keyless) wouldn't start lesson learnt.

Post by Betty »

Popped into Aldi parked up but forgot to turn the bike off, 10 mins later came back out pulled in the brake lever pressed the start button and nothing.
Turned the bike and key off then on again still nothing. Just contemplating getting recovery and finding out the stores post code seems to have given the bike
time to reset itself and it started.
Just wondering if there is a reset time ?

Odd....there isn't a rest time AFAIK. Sometimes I have an issue that when I switch the smart key on, it doesn't seem to switch the bike on, and nothing happens when I try to start it....but it seems to work when I try the smart key again.
Is your smart key battery OK? Do you get the smart key warning light staying on, indicating the battery is low?

New Battery and no flashing smart key, I won't be leaving it on in future.

Sort of related...a bit of an experiment the other day proved that my Forza 350 smart key has double the range of the one on my old X-Max 300 - i.e. if I switch the Forza key on but leave it in the house in the room next the garage, then I can still start the Forza and ride it away - which would be a bummer when I wanted to come home from wherever I'd gone!
So note to self to always remember to have key in pocket; and to continue always switching the key off after use.
What was wrong with proper mechanical keys anyway...

I have always thought it was a major flaw in Keyless ignition.
You could have the key on a table next to the bike, jump on it and ride 100 miles.
Only when you stopped for petrol would you realise where the Key was........
You would think that the manufacturer would show a warning on the dash that the key was out of range, must be very easy thing to do :|

Yes....I've heard plenty of tales of car drivers who have driven off from home without the key, but able to start the car - and then find themselves stranded or have to drive back home again.

My wife used to keep hers in her handbag, she never went anywhere without her handbag.

The Tmax Manual recommends not putting the Fob under the seat just in case this might put it out of range :o

Kymco's key can't be turned off, instead you turn off the bike's receiver. They also don't have an emergency key, they say that if the battery in the remote is fading, there is a place where you can hold it against so it is nearer the antenna. Doesn't sound great to me.

I couldn't turn on the ignition on my keyless Tmax in my garage and tried everything for half an hour. The key had turned itself off when I was away for a couple of weeks, which I realised early on but still no joy when I turned the key on. I finally spotted a 'tip' in the manual that said if you are experiencing such problems, try the starter button instead of the ignition switch. It worked! I now know that I can switch the Tmax on with either method, although why I couldn't get the ignition switch to work at the time is still a mystery.
