I know, yet another post on this subject!

I was in York today and called in at the Piaggio dealer (I don't have a dealer any closer to me). I mentioned that I'd bought a Bev 350ST and asked him about servicing requirements. He said that they were great things and they'd sold a few, and one guy had already done 30,000 miles on his in 2 years! (With tyres lasting 12,000 miles!).
I asked him about the manual mentioning the need for changing 'brake pumps' which I heard were Master Cylinders. He professed not to be aware of any such requirement, and said that changing master cylinders would be ludicrous, as the only things that could fail would be the seals.

So I guess its safe to say that there is at least one rider who's covered 30,000 miles on his original master cylinders!!!

from the horses mouth

Dear Mr b*****

Thank you for your recent web enquiry, apologies for the delay in responding.

We are sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction regarding the maintenance program and brake pump replacement relating to the X10. We have queried this with the factory and the response is as follows.

‘The technical motivation on master cylinder replacement at 15,000 km, is part of a maintenance plan specific to each model in order to maintain unchanged the characteristics and performance. To ensure the proper functioning of the brake system it is necessary to arrange for its maintenance with the intervention mentioned. The failure of maintenance operation at the prescribed mileage may affect the performance of the braking system’

As stated this clearly is not a defect, it is part of the planned model specific maintenance scheme designed to optimize the performance and safety of your machine. We apologize if you were not aware of the cost implications in maintaining your X10 prior to purchase, and suggest you discuss this with the supplying dealer.

We value your custom and brand loyalty very highly and really do not wish to lose you! We hope you will consider the excellent attributes you mention regarding your X10 and continue to be a long term Piaggio customer.

Please note your Customer ID for future reference is 106339374.

Kind Regards,

Shelley

OK....but this is just a load of bland cliches - it doesn't actually say anything, apart from that you must follow the maintenance schedule. The question is why master cylinders should need changing, and at quite frequent intervals, when no other car/bike/scoot in existence (AFAIK) ever requires them to be changed.

Grumpy is right I am sure most of us don't understand it. I have put my provisional order in for a new Maxsym 600 so the X10 500 is not on my list any more. I don't like unanswered questions.

I've just bought a Yamaha FJR1300 and looking through the manual last night, part of the maintenance for this bike is that ALL internal brake and clutch hydraulic 'compnents' (seals?) are changed every two years and hoses must be replaced every four years - regardless of mileage. Went on the FJR forum to ask and no-one has ever changed them, just given them a fluid change. That's all I intend to do to mine.
Paddle harder. I can hear banjo music!

Same as Steve_D says...

States the same in the X Max 400 and Maj Handbook... so that would be the Master Cylinder 'Plunger' and Caliper Seals...

no other bike has this system fitted so they say ..and its down to the pulsing in the system distorting the actual cylinder

Hmmm! A 'distorting' master cylinder sounds like seriously bad news to my not very knowledgable self. A master cylinder is AFAIK a piston moving in a cylinder, so a distorted cylinder implies that the piston is liable to get stuck!!! Which sounds dangerous.
So how's changing the master cylinder going to help? If you have a hard braking incident immediately after changing it, and manage to distort your master cylinder, then its scrap there and then! Either its going to work or not. If it doesn't your executors can sue Piaggio....

i neither know nor care anymore i was told that much shyte by both the dealer and piaggio uk ...what you or i think is totally irellevant the fact is to maintain the performance of the brakes and maintain warranty they need changing for whatever reason .. now people may choose to argue and ignore good luck to them
i only posted the mail as it arrived yesterday ... it only took them 5 weeks to answer my email ...
i pxd it at bridge exeter for a grey xmax 400 a couple of weeks ago ,
not overly impressed by first impressions of the xmax it seems ok and is bloody quick
but is way behind the x10 in terms of the ride and build quality [brakes aside] ...just had its first service which was a pleasant surprise only 25 quidish for parts as yamaha foot the bill for labour .. just havnt bonded with it ..... time will tell ..
