Burgman 400 L0 Not starting up, trains for me today

Just tried again, still no life sign... I give up. Back to bloody trains tomorrow Aye Gee in Welling is the closest bike shop to me, but they only work till 6pm and there's no way i can get there on time unless they have some recovery option to pick it up from home while i'm at work. I'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they can do. Otherwise, i'll try pushing it to them on saturday and hope for a short bill. I could kill for a warm garage now

i ordered a spark plug from ebay as a final attempt before i give in to the dealers in the weekend. I hope the weather improves slightly at least for me to work on the bike and change the plug... If that doesn't improve, it would likely to be above my skill grade anyway.

I would be looking at relays and fuses first. They are probably the most unreliable parts on a car/bike these days.
My Haynes manual says no 4 fuse is the ignition. It also says there are 2 relays on the R/H fairing bracket, 1 is the fuel relay and the other is the safety relay (not to be confused with the sidestand relay which apparently works the indicators as well). If you take them into your local bikeshop/motor factors they can usually find a pattern one to match and not expensive either.
Hope you get sorted with min fuss.

Go for simple stuff first you can get carried away with techno theory stuff

Just a thought... Nobody's mentioned the plug cap(s) or HT lead(s) (is this a single or twin?*). If it's a single, the sudden stop could have dislodged a loose plug cap so it's just resting on the plug and giving intermittent starting or running.

*If it's a twin then it would probably start but run like a two legged dog.

Locate the tilt switch and give it a shake. Make sure it's attached and orientated correctly.
If it was loose and has dropped off it's mountings (usually a rubber ring) and may be sending a false singal that the bike is on it's side. The safety cut out will be active.
That's what was wrong with my second X9 when I bought it. The dealer couldn't start it so I got it dead cheap. Took half an hour to fix at their workshop then I rode it home.

It does sound plausible, and i hope that it's as simple as a loose plug cap. When i get home tonight, i'll take out the spark plug and while doing so i'll be able to tell if there's something loose or not. Once the new plug comes from ebay, i'll replace and retry as well, if i find nothing loose.

I doubt it's a switch mate, otherwise it would never have started up? Last night i managed to start it up, although only briefly for a few seconds. As soon as i let go of throttle, engine died (cold start + been trying for 2 days) Although on fuel injection and auto choke this shouldn't be necessary, as i've been trying to start it for 2 days now, i guess it did need some throttle action to liven up...

Called and booked Aye Gee Welling. They only had time next tuesday (typical!!!) unfortunately they need someone at home to push the bike up the ramp, but i need to be at work all times, so i'll have to push it to them early in the morning that day. Should be interesting.

Has anyone pushed a burgman 400 over a mile and half? I wonder how many heart attacks i'll have on the way...

Might be worth seeing if your breakdown cover will take it for you

i'm afraid it doesn't... This is what i have : Roadside Assistance - roadside repair or recovery home or to the nearest garage (whichever is closer) for you and your vehicle for breakdowns more than 1/4 mile from home.

Even if i pushed it 1/4 mile away and called them up, they'd still tow it back to home as per above rule.

Occasional starts is still likely to be the tilt switch. If it's loose sometimes it doesn't contact, so the engine starts, rev it and the vibes nudge the switch, it connects and kills the motor. Then it won't start again until the kill switch is disturbed slightly again.
