Hi guys, work this one out if you can!

My 83 year old wife has had an AM, A & B1 licence since 1974 and wants to ride her new Honda 50cc (4hp) gyro Trike without a CBT or further test, I’m finding that even riding an MP3 on a car licence alone is questionable in the eyes of Plod....

Has anyone got firmer info? ??

Whats it registered as if Moped or Trike you should be ok.

Honda gyro 50 would be a moped so category P ( moped ) or category A would cover that .
Wheels to close together to be classed as a trike .

Just checked with the seller of the gyro who says that on the V5 it’s classed as a TRICYCLE and had a £15 annual road tax.

My mind is boggling already!

If the rear wheels are more than 460mm apart then classed as trike ?
£20 road tax now .

I take it she has a full motorbike license ( A ) this would cover driving that

Are you sure she will be okay on it my wife is 68 cant see her entertaining one at 83 loves her Fiat Panda too much .

HBMT, So what’s it like being called a Fiat Panda......?

My wife’s 1974 licence has AM, A & B1 on..., it also transpires that she has chronic arthritis so that could change the issue yet again?

I'm presently doing some legal (current and archive) research on licensing for C90club forum to definitively answer some FAQs there.

Though I can't be 100% at this stage, I generally support this view from what I know so far.

Yeah, well, no surprises that Plod has no idea of the law! I'm not an expert so won't try to advise, except that there is a legal distinction between proper tricycles and 3 wheel motorbikes/scoots (yes, I know that sentence sounds mad!), depending on the distance between the wheels and the existence of a footbrake. Some MP3s were in effect scooters, but some were configured with footbrake and a wider track as to be tricycles.

I think that mopeds can still be ridden on a car licence (albeit on one issued a few years ago). My neighbour has a flock of 50cc mopeds of varying vintages and he rides them on his car licence.
