Do I really need a new oil filter?
I was wondering, I tend to do around 1500 miles a year, I changed the oil a few weeks ago and it had a dose of Halfrauds 5w40 fully synthetic. Next year it will need changing again but is it really worth putting a new filter on too? Filters last way more that 1500 miles. What's the perceived knowledge chaps?

If your only changing the oil once a year/ 1500 miles then for what the filter costs, I would change it!
Yesterday is history, tomorrow a mystery but today is a gift!

Re: Do I really need a new oil filter?
Personally I would change it every other year at those miles, book for my X-max says every 12000 thats every 4th oil change, though I would change it at the first 2 oil changes as it's during running in that most
metal ends up in the oil.
As a retired engineer I have seen more disasters caused by over maintenance than under.

I can see Ralph's point and agree overzealous fiddling can cause issues.
However for me oil & filter especially if scooter sits around a lot in winter when weather's bad.
Most of my service issues are bad weather salt road related

I'd also change the filter at every oil change (presuming it's a spin on type), a few scratches on the paintwork & it will quietly rust away
Have wheels, will travel

Re: Do I really need a new oil filter?
On my new Cruisym300 there is no oil filter. It has a thimble like filter similar to the one in the Silverwing. I was surprised, but if you use modern good quality oil, and in your case low mileage per year, maybe not needed but, cost is not that much so why not just change it.

My XMax400 manual states Oil every 3000 miles - Filer every 12000 miles
I use Halfords Fully Synthetic 5w40 Motorcycle Engine Oil and the Halfords10w40 Motorcycle and Scooter Gera Oil for the transmission...
Change the Oil every 3000 (1.7 Lt I think)...
For the few quid cost of the filter... I changed it every other Oil Change... When I do a sort of Mini Service...
Gear Oil Change, Remove and Clean the Pads and Calipers, Change if needed, Remove and Clean the Air Filter(s), Change every other mini-service...
The Oil Filter element is a paper filer type, inside the engine with a cover... not the screw on canister type that have rusted through at the front of a T Max...
The SH with Thimble Gauze and NO oil filter says Oil Change every 5000 miles - I change the oil every 2500 miles (as the old engine spec was) as it only takes a litre...

Change it every year, oil is the most important thing, filters are pennies.

Mottza my old chum, pennies? It cost me twelve quid! You have to factor in that I'm a tight Yorkshire man from Jewish stock. Sending money doesn't come easy to me lol.mottza wrote:Change it every year, oil is the most important thing, filters are pennies.
