Hi Maximike,

The manual says 10-40 grade oil for our UK ambient temperatures. It's best to use a motorcycle oil IMHO and many of us with the Burgman 400 seem to use a motorcycle fully synthetic oil as this has much better flow and heat resistance to semi or dino oil. Personally, I'd avoid car oil as it's not designed to take the revs and stress your modern motorcycle engine can create. You can extend the oil change period too if you use a fully syn oil, IF, you are doing good hot runs on the bike and not constant short trips where the oil doesn't fully warm up. In our testing we did on car oil in motorcycles engines (bench testing of new engine types), it proved to be less than adequate on modern engines as the additive packs just didn't seem to cope well with the extra revs of the bike engines. But it can be used on older less modern engines that don't rev as much as our modern units. But I would have to say why bother when fully syn is so much better and will make you engine last much longer and give both more power, and better fuel economy (this is measurable). The choice is yours.

PS. never use fully synthetic oil in a brand new engine at the first oil change unless the engine is designed for it. If it is, this will be specified in the manufacturers owners manual.

Many thanks for your input it is very helpful, as my experience is on older air cooled engines and I wish to do an oil change on the Burgman soon. :D
