Tyre Sealant

Post by fudge-1200 »

I have recently purchased a used scooter and would like to put Ultra Seal inside the tyres, my question is, Is there any way of telling if it has already been used in the tyres.
I contacted the previous owner, he has never used it but the tyres were on it when he bought it.

I was wondering how long it would take before someone came up with that one.

What would happen by doing this apart from the obvious.

Do you mean if the tyres already have gunge in, or whether gunge was put in at some point in the future?
If you want to know if the tyres have gunge in, I could say wait until you run over a nail or something, but in my experience, the result from having gunge or no gunge won't be much different!

Let all the air out, take out the valve, use something thin and long enough to poke in to the outer edge and if it comes out sludgy on the tip then there is something in there :D

Fudge, yes it's quite easy to tell if you have Ultraseal in the tyres, or any gunge actually. First put the bike on it's centre stand. Next rotate a wheel fully in one direction or another, but stop the wheel with the valve at the 12 o'clock position. Wait for approximately 5 minutes, then undo the valve cap and using a small screwdriver, press in the valve plunger for one to two seconds. The air will rush out of course and bring with it a small amount of gunge. If no gunge appears, there's nothing in the tyre except wind. If you get gunge come out, you must rotate the wheel so the valve is at the 25mins past the hour position, wait for 5 mins, then press the valve plunger again briefly to clear any gunge from the valve before topping up the tyre's air and capping it off. Ultraseal works very well I've found. It's in my cars and I've got it in my Burgman. It's been used in all my bikes over the last 12 years with complete success, except for the one big puncture I got last year when a huge nail went into my rear tyre. Ultraseal worked in so far as it kept me safe ( I rode another 50 miles or so on it) and stopped the tyre deflating. But it failed to fix the puncture after I removed the nail in spite of following the instructions due to the nail being square and about 8mm across. Like I said, huge! I didn't expect it to seal it. Ultraseal has fixed several other punctures on my other bikes over the years permanently. So it does work if the instructions are followed properly. Most folk don't follow the instructions though and I suspect that's why it has mixed results for some folk.

PS. once you have Ultraseal or Puncturesafe as it's now called over here, in your tyres, always check the tyre pressures with the valves at the 25mins past the hour position. That way you won't get any gunge come out as you make the check.
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

Hi Data.
Many Thanks for that explanation, I did use it once on a FJ 1200 I had and it worked on that, miles from home and picked up a nail, I was able to ride it back with no problem so I want to get some in these tyres ASAP.

There have been lots of posts on this some for some against. In my humble view of many years of use Puncturesafe is one of the best accessories you can put on your bike. IT WORKS
