In their first-ever survey of motorcycle owners, Consumer Reports rated motorcycle-brand reliability. Here is an excerpt from the report with graphics:

Yes, the artfully sculpted lines of a BMW motorcycle and the throaty rumble of a Harley V-twin motor can stir your senses. But they’re often accompanied by more problems than Japanese motorcycles from Honda, Kawasaki, and Yamaha. Those are the findings from our first motorcycle reliability survey, conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, in which we asked subscribers to tell us about any serious problems or repairs they had experienced with their bikes in the previous four years.

I'd be more interested in repairs over distance, e.g. per 1000 miles travelled. I'd consider a very high milage bike with three repairs to be more reliable than a nearly new one with two repairs for example, but that chart would show the nearly new one as more reliable.

Also what constitutes a repair for the purpose of the article, mechanical only or cosmetic too (e.g. replacing weathered chrome)? Cost of repair is not mentioned, again three minor repairs might be considered better than two major ones.

And yes, where is Suzuki?

Interesting that BMW have managed to establish such a lead in this competition!
Its actually quite an achievement as less than 10 years ago, they had the reputation of highest build quality and exemplary reliability!!!

Reputation for reliability is often based on marketing hype.
Remember the "If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen" ad campaign?
Thank fcuk it isn't.
