New T-Max, one month on

So - I've had it a month now, and done 1,050 miles - time for a report, if anyone's interested! As a reminder, I'm a lifelong (50 years or so...) motorcyclist (not scooterist) who has always fancied a T-Max since first trying one some time ago. I did own one other Maxi scoot once and it was awful, handling like a pig skating on lard. It would probably be unkind to name it, but there was an X and a 9 in the name...sold very quickly and back to motorcycles.
Collected T-Max on 1st Sept, pretty much the only wet day in September :o - therefore ridden the 60 miles home very gingerly on brand new tyres & brake pads. Screen was rubbish on low setting, stopped halfway and moved it up to 'high', not much better but I was so wet by then my visor was filthy anyway!
Have gradually got to know it over the following, dry, month. Handling is as good as everyone says - I no longer give any thought to cornering; it just goes around any given corner and the chicken strips on back tyre are nearly gone. Sharp bumps mid-corner are a bit unsettling, but that's the same for many bikes. The ride quality was rather 'sharp' and rubbery at first, but that seems to have settled down now. For a bike of this price not to have adjustable rear preload is unbelievable...
The performance is still surprising me - for 'only' 46bhp it goes very well indeed; overtakes have been no problem and it's never felt lacking. Haven't been on a motorway yet (hate the things...) but equivalent speeds have been reached in comfort... The transmission characteristics are excellent; it's a delight to be free of the tyranny of constant gear changes.
Comfort - seat is fine, screen less so. Have added an MRA X-Creen which has reduced the buffeting, but actually most of the wind noise comes up around the lower front of the fairing, and there's not much can be done about that except riding with your knees spread out wide! Earplugs essential. One of the selling points for me is that there's plenty of room to stretch legs, which I like.
There's enough storage space for me, with top box added. I can, for instance, go for a walk and leave all my bike gear in the bike after changing into walking boots etc.
Checked the speedo against GPS after collection and it reads 37 at a true 30...this is ridiculous and probably illegal. Dealer said there was nothing wrong at first service...if that error is duplicated in the mileometer, it makes a complete nonsense of mpg readings which according to the computer have been around 62mpg during running in; according to my maths of filling to brim against miles recorded it's around 58. So it could be about 50!
Dipped beam was rubbish on delivery - too low, and there's no angled beam on the nearside to light up the kerb. Queried at first service and was assured it couldn't be raised any higher because it would be 'too high'...took me 5 minutes when I got home to raise it to a level where I could see where I was going; and it could still go higher without dazzling anyone.
Despite the minor niggles, I'm delighted with it and looking forward to really getting to know it now that it's 'mine' and out of dealer clutches! Hope you've all managed to stay awake...

Nice report, but don't gauge the MPH by comparison with GPS - there are all sorts of angular variations and it measures an 'average of the last few seconds', so is unsuitable for assessment of spot or point speed at that moment. There is also the issue of the number of satellites in view at a particular time, but you get the drift. You cannot be certain of the accuracy of the signal, although it is likely to be more accurate than a uncalibrated speedo that has not been compensated for tyre size and wear.

As for the illegality, while it is illegal for a speedo to read higher than actual speed, no legislation applies if it reads lower.

Most of us do our fuel calcs from used fuel versus mileage covered - even if there is inaccuracy (and speedo does not imply the level of accuracy of the mileometer) at least it is a consistent basis for comparison!

And if you want proper protection from a TMax, CMax is what you need

What on earth...!
Protection is OK, better than most bikes and that's what counts - mainly I can stretch my legs, feet stay dry and aching hip stays comfortable.
GPS is known to be fairly accurate, checked against police speedometer - also there's a handy local flashing speed sign (again, known to be accurate) which shows 39 when my speedo says 46! Wasn't sure about the legality, thanks, but still ridiculous...

Glad you are enjoying it!

My speedo is ludicrously optimistic as well (as far as I can tell). When I come across one of those speed activated warning signs in a 30 limit, I have to be doing at least 35 on the speedo to activate it, and there are signs that tell you your speed, and the speed they indicate is way lower than the speedo!

Screens - similar experience. I found the standard screen OK, but not particularly protective on its lower setting, but noisy in its higher position. I fitted an MRA Vario screen which improves things a fair bit.

4 hours in the saddle today to Shepton Mallett autojumble and back, and I'm off into town tonight - it must be comfortable!

Too many spritzers before you logged in? :D
other way round ya 'nana

+1 on GPS, not accurate for speed

Sounds good Greybeard. I see a matt black one in Manchester that looks good, very Batman.

Indeed, a particularly good South African red. I thank you for the correction.

Do what my brother did with his 530, upgrade the headlamp bulb to Sylvania SilverStar...a HUGE improvement! :D

We also upgraded (FRONT ONLY) the brakes to Sintered; much better braking and fixed the rear lock-up balance problem inherent to all 530's.

Took off the mostly USELESS windscreen, and put on a GIVI Touring screen that we cut-down. PERFECT!

Thanks for all that - all stuff to bear in mind for the future! Now where can I go online to buy some of that California warmth & sunshine...
