T Shirt and Shorts?

Post by Beard »

So I finally got my scooter, so have turned to getting some clothing.

The plan was to get a nice textiles suit that would do me all year round for commuting(one that has removable liners) with maybe my trousers under seat to change into or under my textile trousers. I was also thinking of getting a leather jacket cos I like em and a pair of armored jeans for general out and about riding round town. Plus some gloves and proper bike boots.

But I have noticed when looking at people riding scoots they all seem to wear t shirts and shorts and trainers.

Just wondered what you wear? and whether going ATGATT is overkill on a scoot?

I always wear armoured textile jacket and trousers with sturdy boots and gloves.
They have removeable liners for the winter.
Hitting tarmac at speed hurts just the same whether you come off a scooter or a motorbike.

How much do you value your skin which is VERY hard to replace?

T Shirt and shorts are fine as long as you wear some protective flip-flops on your feet.

As I was parking up in the local town today, a scooter with L plates overtook all the queuing traffic.
On the back was a dimwit on his mobile phone, no shirt and no helmet! :?
It seems to be common place round here, despite the cctv.

Mind you,, it was sunny and he did have tracksuit bottoms and trainers on thank goodness! :D

I gringe when i see a biker go by in just t-shirt and shorts and trainers. I know how much it hurts scraping along the road with protecting clothing so with bare skin must be horific feeling.

Beard let me explain what happens to bikers not wearing the right gear. On arrival at A&E a triage assessment is made. Feet and ankles often have crush injuries these will require long term surgery and will often never be right again. Sterile nail brushes are used to scrub gravel/tarmac from skin injuries (a painful process), followup skin grafts will be required. Bare flesh touching hot pipes etc cause 3rd degree burns. Damage to elbows and knees very difficult to fix normally. Ripping damage to none gloved hands may well mean the hands will not function with a full range of movement again. Then of course damage to the spine may well mean you send the rest of your life in a wheelchair. Shocking but working in an A&E department is heartbreaking when you see young people ruin their lives because they want to look cool. However what really gets my goat is when you see a biker on a sports bike dressed reasonably correctly but his girlfriend is perched on the back wearing a short skirt and high heels. I don't have any children but if I did I would be dad from hell because no way would I be allowing my daughter to ride pillion like that.

Protective clothing is now cheaper and better than when I was in my 20's and I am sorry but only a fool would ride even a 50 cc machine without protection. (I will get off my soap box now and have another Valium)
