Silverwing 600

I love my Majesty but I also like a change and have been looking around. The Burgman 650 seems rather pricy and full of technology which is great when its under warranty, less good when not. The T-Max with ABS is rather expensive but looks great to me. The Maxsym 600i seems really decent, well built enough tech with ABS included and well priced. Up to now I've not really considered the Silverwing, don't know why really bu it seems to offer a good compromise on performance and quality versus cost. What are the muppets views on this, has anyone owned a Silverwing and something like the Majesty to compare? Is the fact it's getting long in the tooth a problem or a virtue, insofar as all the problems have been ironed out. I notice it only has one disc at the front but I would imagine it works just fine and the plus is that it's cheaper to maintain and lots easier to clean the wheel, are these type of things worth getting worries about?

I have never owned a silverwing but have ridden one and found it pleasant enough .However if i was spending that sort of money with the wing being very old hat now so to speak i would go for the sym ,or a t max even a bmw maybe evven a 2nd hand integra ,jmho

Hi Meldrew, I know you've got one and are well pleased. You sound a bit like me in some respects, I appreciate simplicity in engineering as I reckon, rightly or wrongly, it's less likely to go wrong and it's easier to mend if it does. How is the Swing in regards to basic maintenance, oil changes, pad changes, CVT servicing and simply changing a headlight bulb? I have no idea how to change a headlight bulb on the Maj as the handbook says to take it to a dealer, which is helpful...not.

Reliable, comfortable, smooth, quick, fast, relatively economical - the Silverwing has it all.
Of course there are a few bits which might be better but that's the same with everything.

People keep on about 'old technology' but I'm certain Honda upgrade the engine from time to time without broadcasting the fact - there was a sudden jump in fuel efficiency around the 2008/9 models.

I probably won't buy a replacement maxi but if I do it'll be a Silverwing provided they're still in production.

It's already been said that the Silver Wing is getting long in the tooth which is true, that's why they appeal to riders who are usually long in the tooth too. Silver pubes = Silver Wing!

As Meldrew says iam picking up a new shiny black Silverwing,hopefully tomorrow morning. My present Silverwing i have had for four years(it was three years old when i got it but), only had 1,380 mileup. My present one now has 40,000mls on it. As Meldrew well knows i don't like parting with my brass, so, I do all my own maintainance and fettling. Changing oil and filter is a five minute job well, maybe 10 if you count waiting for the oil to drain. I fitted Dr Pulley sliders at about 20,000mls and put iridium spark plugs in at 8,000mls. Changing the drive belt at 16,000mls and again at 32,000mls.Like Meldrew i fitted the Givi Airflow screen and have a top box. I have recently tried the Burgman 650, and the TMax but, for me, the Silverwing rings my bell. Basic maintainance is no problem but a Workshop manual is a big help. I have a thing about my bikes i do not like to have anyone touch them once i have bought them, not even a dealer. I once had a bad experiance after picking a bike up after it was supposedly serviced, and when i checked none of the things i paid for had been done, just some trainee forgot to tighten a wheel nut.

I've never owned one, but they are very good, after 2007 they got better with fuel. Maybe my next scoot.

I have had mine since the end of April and now have 2k miles on it. I use my Silverwing for pleasure only and it has been a slow burn for me, initially I had a couple of issues which have mainly been rectified by the dealer and I suppose that jaundiced my first impressions of the bike. Now with some miles under my belt I really love it, the fact that it is essentially a 13 year old design was something that appealed to me (yes I am an old biker) and there is loads of information available on the internet, I have found the bike very comfortable on the two long distance day rides (1 x 250 and 1 x 300 miles) I have done so far, economy according to my calculations is circa 65mpg but that is keeping it below 5000rpm (approx 70mph) which suits me. Negotiated the third year warranty as part of the deal which basically ties me into dealer servicing as there are some jobs on the schedule I would not attempt. Bought the bike as a keeper, so hoping for ten years worth of riding from it at least unless I have to retire from riding. I did try other bikes before settling on the Honda and despite the second hand example I had a test ride on being a bit ropey the overall impression was good and the wife finds the pillion very comfortable.
