New PCX vs Used S-Wing

Post by Beard »

Hi,

I am new to bikes and was looking for some advice please.

Budget 2.5k, looking for a good looking scoot, mainly for riding local but with the option to maybe go a but further afield as I get the bug :) I will be doing my CBT soon.

I know that the pcx has a new model due out now which looks nice with better seat, bigger tank etc, but wasn't sure if that is a better bet than a used s-wing.

Priorities are :

Be easy for a noob to ride(am 5'10).
Comfort is important.
If possible to use for some groceries, as I don't have a car.
Resale value if i end up getting a license and going bigger, although I haven't seen many s-wings about ( I'm in Essex). But am happy to buy new if that's the better option.
Also not sure if all the s-wings come with ABS? or if I even need it!

Cheers

An S-wing is the slightly bigger, roomier touring option, and has more power I think. So probably the better option for slightly longer trips. S-wings are/were very pricy new, but there are loads around secondhand.

As much as I like buying new, I'd take a used S-wing over a new PCX

S-wing is quality kit in every department, PCX is built to a low price point.

Don't forget that there are some stunning Vespa GTS 250ie scooters around that price point second hand too.

Thanks for the help.

I was edging towards the s-wing, although as I said there are not many near me and I must have white, lol.

Is there any advantage to buying from a dealer rather than private, bearing in mind I know nothing!

Regarding models 2010 onwards, is there any differences year on year on spec etc, e.g. they would all have abs?

Should I be looking for as low miles as poss or as new as I can get for the money?

These are what I have seen so far, although some are too far to see, but it will give me an idea on whats overpriced or a good deal.

Private : 2009(doesnt mention abs in desc) £1500, 19500 miles.
Private : 2010(abs)£1600, 20000 miles.

Dealer: 2011(doesnt mention abs in desc)£2200 10000 miles
Dealer: 2011(abs) £2500 6000 miles
Dealer:2012(doesnt mention abs in desc) £2500 4700 miles
Dealer:2012(abs) £2600 6500 miles
Dealer:2013(abs) £2600 22000 miles

Thanks.

If you really want to spend all your £2500 budget get an S-wing.
But you can get an almost unused PCX for under £1800...

It will do all you need and more.
PCX scooters have completed the cannonball run and have gone coast to coast across the USA.
Also worth considering are the Yamaha Xmax, Kymco Downtown and Sym GTS/Joymax if you can find examples within your budget.

I like and considered both the SWing and PCX but I opted to have a new Piaggio Fly 125 3 valve model. The ultimate main reason was it's new air cooled engine so no radiator/water to worry about and it's service intervals are a long 10,000km (6200 mile), with an excellent claimed up to 144mpg (I get 100). It has good underseat storage but not as much as an SWing. If you are interested It's currently available for £1595.

Yes the PCX can do all you need, but the S-Wing will do it better. And be less strained on roads out of town, while giving you a bit more protection from the wind at higher speeds.

By all accounts the others are fine (although doesn't the Sym have short service intervals?) but as an overall overall proposition I feel that the S-Wing is probably the wise choice.

Buying from a dealer will cost you more but give you some peace of mind.
