So a lovely young lady suddenly slammed her brakes on in front of me this morning instead of pulling out onto a completely empty roundabout!

Luckily I didn't come off although I did slam my shin into the under dash storage resulting in a graze, a lump and by the feel of it an impressive bruise.

My beloved maxi suffered a right smack on the nose and although rideable is going to have to come off the road until the insurance company sort themselves out so that's doubled my daily travel costs

And of course it goes without saying that it's automatically my fault

Oh man, that sucks. At least the damage is fixable and you are whole.

Glad your OK. I did similar damage to my GTS Evo just before Christmas when a woman and her son run out in front of me. After contacting the insurance, I realised it was cheaper to just order the panels. Mud guard and top fairing, £160 all in. Might be worth getting the panels priced and getting the woman to pay, save any grief on your insurance.

Might save hassle with insurance but the other party won't pay for it! If you run into the back of someone, its your fault, no matter how idiotic the person in front is.

Having several near misses of this sort myself, I now make a rule to always stare fixedly at the person in front until they move off, and never look round the roundabout for a likely gap until they go!

Not always.
I've known a few cases where the driver in front has been held responsible.
You should never stare fixedly, always keep your eyes moving and see the bigger picture.

There's a reason for this lesson in primary training - it presumes every other road user is at the same level as your car driver and is about to do something stupid - with a suitable gap, you can laugh at them, not crash.

But an expensive lesson to learn when all you had to do is ask!

Guess we can count you as a supporter of the ABS Club now?

Normally yes. But at roundabouts, I find it safer not to look for gaps until the person in front has definitely moved off. My view on the size of gaps needed to pull out into seems often to much smaller than other drivers round here!
Birmingham seems another story - they all seem to pull out into the tiniest gaps without any hassle. Round here, if another car is visible in any direction, thats enough reason not to move!
