Re: The end of the tax-disc?
I would be glad for this to be implemented. I always worry if the tax disc would get knicked and having the hassle of replacing it. I always tax so no problem for me.

I always wondered what the point of discs was these days since technology allows the police instant knowledge of whether you are taxed or not.

I don't display it, just keep it in my pocket. The disc holder just has a copy in it and it's totally illegible.StevenM wrote:I would be glad for this to be implemented. I always worry if the tax disc would get knicked and having the hassle of replacing it. I always tax so no problem for me.
Apart from the antiquated law about 'failing to display' you first of all have to actually find a traffic copper out on the street who could give a monkeys about such out of date law. Finding a copper out on the street is a long shot anyway.
Even the MOT certificate issued now could easily be replicated on any PC and printed out so it is useless. What counts is the on-line record that anyone can check with. I don't even have insurance certificates as they were emailed to me as PDF's and I can't be bothered wasting paper printing them out.

Yes, change the system:
First, issue personal number-plates to motorists which are swapped from vehicle to vehicle - the plate is registered centrally.
Second, make drivers/riders carry the vehicle documents in the vehicle.
It works elsewhere. There is no reason why it shouldn't in the UK.

This is the way forward...get the tax elsewhere, as if we don't already pay enough!gn2 wrote:Better yet, just end road tax altogether.

'We estimate that removing this pointless piece of paper would save the government around £90m a year.'
And how much of this will be deducted from the cost of road tax? NON!

Hows the plate thing work, you must have to inform them that you've changed vehicles?Waldorf wrote:Yes, change the system:

Re: The end of the tax-disc?
Yes but it's no more complicated than doing so here.
As the number-plate is registered to its owner at a given address a form for paying the annual fee at the bank is sent through the post.
In fact the form is a Bank Transfer document so no actual cash is involved.
This payment system is used for many transactions; I paid annually for my parish magazine in the same way.
