Now I'm the opposite - there is nothing ever quite what I'm looking for! The Tmax is closest, but I'd like something with a bit more grunt (and better fuel economy, lower running costs and more luggage space, whilst costing less to buy and being lighter, obviously!)

I'm the same as you Mr. G, the machine which comes closest to my requirements for a conventional motorcycle is a scooter.
There isn't any motorcycle built today which meets all of my requirements.

Solely because of the reason I have my Burgman, I looked at touring motorcycles because of the upright riding position, shaft drive, side panniers and top box storage space plus reasonable wind/weather protection and a decent, sustainable cruising speed. Like the 650 Burger, I wouldn't want one for everyday or commuting use though. The clutch/manual gear side of things doesn't bother me but honestly, with no step-through design I sprained a bollock just cocking my leg over the seat and that took me a few weeks to get over! I'd need to warm up each day before getting on one. Or exercise more!

While my TMAX is in for some attention, I have been lent a Yamaha Fazer FZ8, 799cc, performance as follows:

• 0-60 in 3.64 secs
• 0-100 in 8.10 secs
• 0-120 in 13.14 secs
• top speed 141 MPH
• Standing quarter 11.93secs at 115.87 mph

As an ex biker this brought back memories with its fantastic acceleration in any gear but really nice if you change down from 6th to 4th or 3rd.

I know there might be faster sports bikes but I found that overtakes on a cross country single carriageway run were so easy.

I could get in to a lot of trouble with a bike like this as it encourages licence losing riding !

Hang on,down to earth though because it started to rain and ....

I ended up like a drowned rat, crotch wet, knees wet, boots soaked through, the rain got down my neck (it ignored my yellow waterproof
jacket) and soaked into my lightweight summer jacket and on through to my shirt.

I was soaked to the skin ... oh yes my fingers were very cold AND IT ISNT EVEN WINTER YET !

No,give me back my Tmax with better than just good performance and weather protection ... when I rode over to the dealer in the morning I did not bother
with over trousers as the few showers did not get thru to either my gloves, helmet or jacket.

Not only that but bikes have poor luggage capacity.

You've just summed up what we all know - the difference between bikes and maxi scooters.

Here comes this week's update with the Street Triple.



First the sound. It sounded nothing like the Tiger! This motor is special. I found my self revving just so I could listen to it.

Much faster than the Tiger too, specially in low revs. And surprisingly, it felt easier to ride in the city. Might be the smaller size and the street suspension.

I did 80mph for the first time without any wind protection. A very different feeling. Like lying down on air with the pressure.

Even though the looks are something that still grows in me, most other people tend to like it. I got way more looks than with the Tiger, the sound plays it's role of course. I even got kids encouraging me to do a wheelie.

I did get some slight pain on my right shoulder after an hour or so. I guess it's the riding position that isn't as comfortable as on the Tiger and the lack of wind protection. I guess not going often enough to the gym too. lol
Not a deal breaker though. With this kind of bike I see me taking the car for longer distances. The missus would prefer that too.

A week ago I actually saw a guy with a speed triple on a long distance trip. Bags everywhere and all that. So travelling is possible. With regular breaks I assume. Even this guy was at a rest stop.

Would I sell my TMax for it?
I don't know, I'd like to have both. I do like it more than the Tiger 800XC but my shoulder got me a bit worried. I had the same pain last year when I did 620 miles on the TMax with the sport screen on.

I'd be willing to hit the gym more often for this though. The riding sensation was amazing.

Next week they will get a Tiger 800 (not the XC model) in. I'll go have a look at this too.

I think that is just what I wanted to hear from a fellow TMAX fan. I did my first days DAS last Saturday to convert my auto licence to a manual. I really want to ride one. The machine I did the training on was a Yamaha XJ6 600 naked. Despite having 76bhp, it had the same torque as the BMW C600 so didn't feel any quicker. Easy to handle though.

The BMW C600 ticks all of those boxes apart from the lighter and running costs perhaps although I know Yamaha's servicing can be expensive too. If I don't like riding a manual, I'll stick with the Beemer, at least until we get the TMAX abs over here.

Hahah. When I went home after the test drive I went through all possible accessories for the street triple. There is a ton. And the fact that its naked makes things even easier.

I took my licence on an XJ6 too, last year. Nice bike. Found the Street Triple 675 much better. More grunt, better sound. It looks bigger than it is too.
