1500 miles is nufink>>>>>BUT: it all depends upon how those 1500 miles have been ridden, if stop start city riding :::change the filter. If on the other hand you do six trips a year at break neck speed downt motorway and the motor/oil gets proper hot...don't bother...
Me: for the cost involved i would change both once a year.

Sorry Jaz i lost them when my HDD went East, it was my backup external and Tony moved it whilst it was running and dropped it
I think it was about 4 1/2 years old as well...looked like a late 60's Alfasud

Thanks for the input chaps. I suppose I'll change the filter too. Assuming I've not traded it in, I like the look of the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650.

Re: Do I really need a new oil filter?
Yeah, changing it each oil change is ok and mostly what I do. Yet, if you are doing low miles then leaving it IS ok dependant on a couple of things! On the Burgmans and many other makes of bike it will tell you to change the oil filter every other oil change. These will be mostly the screw on type, but some cartridge filters are ok to leave until every other oil change too. But as has been said by someone else on here, if you are not doing lots of 'hot' miles in that 1500 annual mileage then change the filter as well. Contaminates in the oil such as condensation, piston blowby etc form sulphuric acid in the oil, which is mostly taken care of by the oil additives, but if you only do low colder miles those additives can get used up very quickly leaving some acid sitting in the filter. It's often the acid in the filter that will cause the filter to leak as it eats it's way through from the inside. Couple that with rust from the outside and you can see the problem!. You really wouldn't think that would happen, but it actually does. This was something I discovered during some of the testing we did on a range of bikes, oils and filters some years ago when I worked in the engine development industry.

Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

Thanks Data, I knew someone would know what to do in the end lol. Years ago I had a Renault car, it specified a new filter every second oil change, this got me wondering you see.Data wrote:Yeah, changing it each oil change is ok and mostly what I do. I change my filter every 6000 miles on the T Max. Just oil at every 3000 miles .I bail mine down the A27 every day so it always gets nice and hot each day.
