IMHO scooters will never outdo a geared bike for fun factor, changing gears gets you more involved more part of the machine hence more exhilaration & fun.
You keep repeating this "Fun factor"

I only really ride for fun as I work from home.
Sylar , Meldrew, gn2 and others do loads more miles than me but I've still done 2600 on my mk4 Tmax and about 1200 on the mk2, in the last 9 months. More than a few "proper" bikers I know.

I can remember being up at CMC Clay Cross in February and there was 1 bike and me outside. I was there with Clive in June and there was probably 100 plus motorbikes.
Are you saying that those on motorbikes have more fun than me? If so, how come they don't go out on them more often?

My advice to you is get a Tmax!
A "ridiculously overweight & slow maxi" ??
No. Ride it and have real fun, showing up a few "proper" bikes 8-)

Benr , Yes my srv has a chain lol and brembo gold callipers oh and a16" fireblade size front wheel and i agree with the lets loose a few kilo`s ,which if you rode an srv back to back with a tmax you would notice a difference due to there being 30 kilos between the 2 machines . I have been slowly reducing and lowering the weight thats carried on my srv to get closer to where i would like it to be .That and 2 stone off of myself will be nice .I have a lot of friends who ride bikes of the geared variety who now are seriously considering and buying the bigger maxis since i got mine ,most of the ones who have purchased have hardly used there bikes since and when many of us have asked WHY ,they reply with most of the time " i have never had such fun and the mrs comes out with me now and we will have a day out rather than a quick run out with the lads " . What ever you ride Benr just enjoy yourself safely .

I was thinking of the old GL1200 aspencade not the new Gl1800.

If I was going to have a bike again it would probably be a Moto Guzzi V7 Stone.
Can't think of another shaft drive bike on the market just now which I am even remotely interested in.
Maybe a Yamaha XV950.
After having scooters I doubt I could put up with chain drive again.

I suppose at the end of the day it's each to their own,if you want to buy a bike,go for it.
Having a bike licence will always be handy.
Gives you more scope when it comes to riding.

Always worth getting a bike licence with gears - just so you can if you want to.

Scooters are somehow more fun though, changing gear takes away from the pure riding experience and drags you back to outdated mechanics.
Similarly I suspect it's more fun flying as a bird than a man stuck in the cockpit of an aeroplane checking the engine carb heater etc.

Scooters bring you closer to the real outside. A decent electric bike or scooter might even be better - an even less intrusive engine on those.
