I only found out last week that if you live on any of our islands, including the Isle of Wight, a CBT isn't required.....

I was also told, that Staffordshire police- amongst others, recognize that those who passed car tests before 1991, have an automatic right to a full moped licence - which, since January 2013, now acts as a provisional for up to a 125, ergo....no CBT required. As long as the paper part of your licence tallies up.

However, they do recommend that new riders sit the first CBT, for safety reasons only, but have no concern as to whether it is retaken every 2 years

That sounds about right... but 'prolly overtaken by more recent changes - like the Hazard perception etc... Direct Access an all that...
I remember when i started to ride a Motorcycle ('93) ... As i had a full car licence ('87) i could ride a 125 on L's indefinatly... But, if i wanted to progress to a Full Licence, i would need a CBT...
There was a big kick-up at the time, specificaly from the Cab 'Knowledge' Lot - about having to pass a CBT, more specificaly the expiry after 2 years if they were never intending on doing a full test or riding anything over a 125cc... 50cc wouldn't do due to Honda 90's...

Obviosly a CBT or similar of the time, is worthwhile for safety sake... but wasnt a requirment....

A moped is a 50cc bike only, any bigger engine is classed as a motobike.
we cant find the relevant part of dvla that states a cbt is required or not on a car licence,its a bloody mindfield

1. Overview
Most learner motorcycle and moped riders must take compulsory basic training (CBT) before riding on the road.
You then have to pass your full motorcycle test within 2 years or you’ll have to take CBT again.
You need to book CBT through an approved training body (ATB) - each ATB sets its own fees.
When you don’t need to take CBT
If you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001 you don’t need to take CBT to ride a moped.
Mopeds have a maximum engine size of 50cc and a maximum speed of approximately 31mph.
You also don’t have to take CBT if you:

•have a full moped licence from passing a full moped test after 1 December 1990
•have a full motorcycle licence for one category and want to upgrade to another
•live and ride on some offshore islands
