What I had in mind was something very simple, like adding a tensioner on the belt, nothing fancy.
I'd view it as the mechanical simplicity being "mildly compromised" rather than "defeated", sounds a bit less absolute.

Irev, someone mentioned on here (can't remember who) about Kymco advised BM not to do something with their CVT a certain way. Unfortunately I can't remember exactly what was said mores the pity.

Wasn't the problem with the BMWs supposed to be in the final wet-chain drive rather than the CVT? Or between the CVT and the chain drive? I don't think it was with the CVT itself.

Curiously, Honda use a CVT type auto transmission on the Jazz! - though I don't know any more than that about it. DCT technology is known in the car world, though VW are the best known for it.

I'm not sure, but quite possibly. Although Honda haven't introduced it into their cars yet, I'm sure the experience they've learned from their DCT in motorcycless will eventually be transferred across into their car division.

The DAF variator change was driven by the engine vacuum I think, but similar

For high torque applications you'd tend to use a toroidal CVT - no belt, just cones and rotors

Yes...but I think they have a different system now. When I had my last accident I had a Fiesta automatic as a replacement vehicle (with my hurt shoulder I couldn't drive a manual car, let alone a scoot), and the auto box on that was absolutely appalling. It wasn't a CVT though - it definitely had different ratios, the problem being that it seemed to choose which one to engage entirely at random!
