I occasionally ride an electric bicycle myself. Its a legal one which cuts all electrical assistance at 15 mph so then its like a heavy bicycle which will only achieve higher downhill speeds. I have seen 25 mph but my old legs can't turn the pedals fast enough to make any difference at that speed so its gravity only. Generally I settle on the medium assistance option which gives me some exercise and can usually hold 12 mph except on steep gradients. For practical purposes there would be little point in defeating the limiter because it would reduce the range drastically.
E-scooters on the other hand have slipped under the radar with no official power or speed limitations in most cases.

A 21 year old died only a few streets away from where I live on an e-scooter, they think he was travelling at full speed, hit a defect in the road and smashed into the back of a parked car, he was critically injured and died within hours of the amubulance getting him into the local hospital. No other vehicles were involved.
I also know of another user who died elsewhere in Essex, he some how wrapped himself round a lamp post suffering a fatal head injury.
I know they are supposed to be bringing in legislation for them, but I would want to see that legislation match a 16+ year old passing a CBT to ride a 50cc scooter.

They are in fact regulated to 15mph if they are the official trial scooters. It's only privately bought e-scooters that will go faster. Some are ridiculously fast & lethal. Several are being ridden in my home town without protective gear of any kind. Our local force seize as many as they can each week & crushes them.
Plus one on that legislation Peter. A lad ended up critically injured a year or so ago in Chelmsford after hitting a pothole at speed. No head protection worn. Suffered severe head injury.
