Yes, I am reliably informed it is indeed a Airbus A400M. I know nothing about planes really, just assumed all those "biguns" were Hercs. I remember a few years ago going up the Kirkstone there were loads of them literally tumbling down the pass. Big Hercs, Euro Fighters, all sorts. I got a new phone recently which is a good job as its dead fast to get into the Camera and fire off shots. Had I still had the old one it would have been over Penrith by the time it had taken the first shot.

Had a quick visit to the lakes myself last week. On the way I went via Hawes - Sedbergh and Kendal. Honestly the A684 is the twistiest lumpiest road I've ever ridden! There's barely a straight on it! I was tired out by the time I got to Kendal!

Sadly a lot of the great roads up here are spoilt by them being a bit lumpy, potholed and uneven. Cumbria seems much better than North Yorkshire but not everywhere. Ive done a lot of the Alps and the Pyrenees and as well as being on a different scale completely the surfaces are fantastic. Would love to take the BV350 out there but its too heavy for the back of the van and a trailer is a PIA.

The road surface was OK (by UK standards) - the lumps were the ups and downs in the road, especially between Sedbergh and Kendal. If North Yorkshire CC put half as much effort into properly resurfacing roads as they do 'surface dressing' them (ie dumping stones over them), the county's roads might be better! What annoys me with N Yorks is the utterly random way they seem to select roads to do - tiny minor roads that serve 3 farms are expensively rebuilt, whilst well used roads that are deteriorating fast are ignored. OK rant over (for now....)!
If you want to see some really bad roads, try some B roads in the Dumfries & Galloway region of Scotland.....I've taken to avoiding some of them as their condition is so treacherous that I consider them risky in daylight, and downright dangerous at night.

Yes now you mention it we toured through Dumfries and Galloway on the way back from Arran back end of last summer. Definitely some dodgy roads. The only place Ive seen worse than the UK in Europe is Belgium oddly.

These aircraft used to fly over Teesside every now and then, for some unknown reason. Strange looking things - short and fat, with a ludicrously high tailplane, and they make a rather peculiar noise.
