Gotta be careful on stuff like the valve check. There are LOTS of techs out there who SALIVATE when something like that comes in. As they almost NEVER, EVER need any re-shimming at 12k, they do filters, etc., SAY they checked and away it goes, as they flag a couple extra hours for NOTHING...at no risk to them. Might even do it AGAIN at 24k...

Nobody watches at the dealership; nobody CARES. The FASTER the Techs work, the MORE MONEY the Shop makes. Do the MATH.

I twisted wrenches for 20+ years and have seen it all; 100k services at the dealer where they clean the engine bay up and wipe the parts down with COCONUT OIL. Shiny! New!!! And send it down the road not even changing the oil...with the old oil filter from another service company still on.

My advice: DO IT YOURSELF! You won't break-off plastic tabs hurrying, leave fasteners off and do it WRONG while charging for parts you might not actually replace.
(If you aren't HANDED your old filters, etc. DO NOT PAY FOR THEM!)

There is that argument of course. Though I guess it depends on how well you know / how much you trust the mechanics. I've a couple of people round here who I'm confident would do a good job.

The valve check is a fair old piece of work - requires quite a lot of dismantling I believe as the front of the engine is quite well hidden.

And in my case, I'm so clueless mechanically, I couldn't possibly do the job, and if I tried, the result would be far more disastrous than any mechanic!

same here... hence I like to once in a while to take the scoot to a professional to do the full service to make sure everything from a professional POV is good. The Yammy dealer nearest me has a very good reputation. If I had all the tools and knowledge I would do it myself... but for the cost of every 2-3 years taking my bike in for even a £500 look and fix by a professional its worth it.

i would take a flask and some butties with me and watch, as you learn alot... i did the valve adjustment on the nexus in summer and the tupperware that had to be taken off if i had a trolley jack it would have been easier to drop the engine, but hey next time

but even if you source and take in what filters and oil you would like to use then i am sure that will save you a few quid, or even if you get to know a mechanic thats mobile, then you could get the tupperware off for him before his visit, just a thought
