I like to travel really early in the morning, you can get a tankful done before breakfast, another one before lunch and a final one before finding somewhere to stay for the night. That's about 450 miles. Next day, a later start, about 300 miles. Doing 2 days riding you will be glad of a days rest sight seeing.

OK, I'm not one for very long trips, but 600 miles sounds far too far to me! It just sounds like torture. If you are thinking of doing all that just to get back sooner, then I wonder why you want to go? You won't see anything on the way apart from M-way signs, and you'll be to knackered to see anything when you get there. Frankly I'd say do half that as an absolute maximum - shorter days mostly - and plan a route with lots of things to stop and see on route. Its supposed to be for enjoyment rather than an endurance test isn't it??????MjW wrote:Any idea how many miles per day are feasible?
I'm hoping 600 miles. Make the trip in 3-4 days or something. Too much?

Yeah you are right, 600 miles is way too much. I remember my trip up north now when I did 530miles in 12 hours. Had to do only 220miles the next day. It was ok, but I wasn't in my freshest when I came back. I can only imagine the feeling will get worse the 4th and 5th day.
400 miles per day on average sounds about right. More or less depending on the route and the day.

Still sounds like hard work rather than fun though. Depending on the sort of roads you'll be travelling on, 400 miles still take you at least 6 hours of solid riding - considerably more on non-motorway type roads, plus 3 fuel stops and stops to refuel yourself every two hours or so, so you are talking about anything up to a 10 hour day.MjW wrote:Yeah you are right, 600 miles is way too much. My trip to Italy with vespa in back of van is 350miles per day for first 2 days Mway and any free m'way can get thro Belgium and France and overnight in budget hotels .That will get me near Swiss border then 2 days at 200 a day thro Switzerland to Italy as camping after that so need early finish .Van is 1996 mk5 tranny Tourneo 2.5 non turbo with 158 K on clock so wont be going over 60 mph as it gets noisy and wife will have Northern soul playing non stop with her feet up on the dash .

9-10 hours on the road combined with stops and riding, doesn't sound that bad. The way I see it, I'm going to travel by myself so I won't have much better things to do but ride.
At least this is how I see it now. I might end up doing less, and getting full body massages along the way. lol

My trip with Bob in 2006 we did some 14 hr days and evening meal was from last petrol station or out of vending machine in Hotel Formule 1 as we were too knackered to go out to eat . Thats was pre cheap gps days so a lot of stopping looking at maps and getting lost .

I did Russia and the East one year with a gang of BMW1200gs'ers we did 8862 miles in 6 weeks..
it was one of the holidays i least remember cos all we did was ride, saw nothing and did nothing.
As has been said. keep it down to 2 or 250 miles per day and enjoy the ride.
