Agreed, you got your specific answers, and I found out that mk3's were made in spain, friendly chit chat.

Thanks guys for your feed back on the tmax as man are they hard to come across in New Zealand. We are not big on Maxi scooters over here and man am i willing and trying to promote them. 8-)

Oh yes..that happened to me. The mirror stem didn't break, but the plastic covering cracked. Frankly I just ignored it - it didn't get any worse or cause any problem. Might a useful point to haggle with though!

Surprised to read this. My Mk3 has a 'JYA' VIN which I always thought indicated Japanese manufacture. I've had euro made Hondas and Yamahas in the past and I would say the 'Max feels Jap-made. Apart from quality, usually the inclusion of 'local' componentry - wheels, brakes, etc. - tends to give the game away. The Maxes look like quite complicated things to make, so unless they were building them up from kits shipped from Japan it's hard to see it being worthwhile establishing a lot of bespoke processes in a European factory. E.g., the vacuum cast alloy frame has commonality with the Japan-made sports models.

Right, off back to lurk mode....

We are pretty well certain that the mk1 and 2s were made in Japan, though we aren't sure about the mk3 and 4. I suppose I ought to be tell from the VIN plate - anybody give me a clue how to decode it?? (once I find it!).
For me the mk3 at least didn't quite give me that 'Japanese' feel - not like the mk2. Given the huge numbers involved, would this make Yamaha more or less keen to make them in Europe?

You're right about the T-Max being a rare fairy in Aotearoha. North Shore Yamaha...now gone down the gurgler... had the last Mk3 that I was aware of, and that sat in the show room for over three years. It eventually went for a heavily discounted price. I must admit to being tempted at the time, but my Mk2 and I have bonded and the separation anxiety was to much to contemplate. Max is up to the big 50 soon. I guess a card will be in order.
The remaining Yamaha dealer in Auckland is Red Baron. They have the new model bikes and wee scoots. Probably get you a Mk4 if you waved money at them.

Thanks spdtwn and look forward to corrosponding with you. Good site this is as nothing like this in our country and i given up on majesty usa site as they try to out do each other and run everyone down. This site is constructive. 8-)

FFS. The Spain question and Lambretta quote was directed at Mr Grumpy. No way did it detract from the direction of this thread. So why be rude? A newbie with 15 posts already shouting his mouth off. And its Sergeant, not Captain if you'd bothered to read my profile properly.
