Might just have to see whats left over in the budget after I finish getting the rest of my gear (and the scooter of course), I've got a helmet boots and some gloves to get yet

Although discussions on helmets (like oil and tyres) can deteriorate into 47 pages of disagreement can I just mention (though sure you're already aware) that the fit of the helmet is the most important thing, along with quality of construction/protection.

Although debatable morally most people try on helmets at local stores (Hein Gericke, Infinity, J&S etc) so they know what size they are, you will be different size in different brands. Then explore online store offers (Ghostbikes seem good).

If you're lucky enough to have an HJC-shaped head also check out Box helmets, reputedly made in the same factory so same shape and similarly 4* or 5* SHARP rated and very good value. It is possible to get a good well-made helmet for under 100, not everyone needs to pay 500 for a Schuberth.

Mostly true, though comfort is also important. Quality of construction is important but the snag is that its really difficult for us ignorant punters to judge the technical qualities in a shop, let alone on a website. So if asked (which I'm probably not being), I'd stick with an established brand - you ain't going to get rubbish at least (though personally I think Caberg are pretty near it....). I'd avoid cheap stuff - you just have no idea how its made.
I stick to Arai, though I can afford it! At least they are (for me) supremely comfortable.

On construction you can get an idea just by flexing the lid to see how rigid or creaky it is, lots of the cheaper brands give themselves away here. But I was especially promoting Box as I have a couple of them and assuming they fit you they're well made, comfy, 4/5* rated and are at sensible prices. I'm led to believe they're effectively HJC product but simply marketed as a budget brand option.
