Just a little heads-up for anyone who stumbles across this looking to decide whether Fully Synthetic oil is viable for use in a Scooter...

Data made a really useful contribution on another thread http://www.maxi-muppets.co.uk/forum/vie ... 48#p179269" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that said;
Data wrote:Paul, everything sounds like it's going swimmingly. If I may make a suggestion...and it's only that because it's your bike and you can do what you want to do...but personally, I would avoid the fully synthetic oil until around the 6k mark. You engine won't finish conforming (fully running in!) until around then. It's the same for virtually all mid to larger size four stroke engines. To some degree this mileage may vary slightly depending on how the bike is used and how you ride it. Fully synthetic will not enable the engine to finish conforming and you may eventually end up using oil as more miles go on her. It's a common problem on engines not designed to use fully syn from new when owners switch to fully syn much too early. Burgman 400's should only have it in from 5- 6k too. Fully syn is so good at reducing engine wear to virtually zero that it stops the engine fully running in if used too early. I can send you an interesting article written by someone who is an engine scientist if you are interested which covers this very point. Let me know if you are interested.

So its back to the Halfords Motorcycle semi 10w/40 then...
The 5w/40 fully will have to gather dust in the garage for a year - oh well - should keep...

You could still use the semi/part synthetic oil in your Scoot - that's still currently £10 for 4 litres - if you wanted to.
I need to change my oil every 3000km. I have researched and researched to understand whether it will cause any problems - or harm - using a good quality (better value) car oil in my Scoot. I did this for economic reasons - my money doesn't seem to stretch as far as it did. ;)
My Scoot has now covered 11,000 miles and thrives on its diet of fully synth. I am content with my decision. 8-)

The thing that bugs me about these 4 litre cans is that they are rarely enough for the average car so you would end up having to buy another 4 litre can or an overpriced 1 litre bottle. I work on cars all day long so I only buy the 5 litre cans.
