Hi Jim be great to see you.Let's hope the weather is ok to ride. Found the start point this afternoon. I've been past it hundreds of times and never registered the Pub name. Alan and I did a couple of hours today just wondering. Really pleasant.

Gerard, thanks for the 'heads up' for this via the 'Northern Riders' text service.

Assuming the weather holds I may lurk somewhere just outside Sheffield and tag onto the rear of the cavalcade as it passes.

Depending on if it's icy or not, I hope to RV with the group at the Visitor's Ctr. Then ride back along the Snake Rd towards Glossop. where I'll get onto the M57, M60, M66 towards home.

Sorry Huddsman.......I'm going to have to admit to being lily livered and advising in advance that the forecast conditions will be beyond my limits for enjoyment.

I went out from here on Friday to fuel up in anticipation of Sunday and had a run only as far as Chatsworth and some minor roads, ie not particularly high ground, and despite the lack of a marked frost that night there was a lot of frozen run off from the fields, particularly in all of those shaded hollows, tree lined areas and north facing slopes.

Tonight is forecast a much more severe frost and bearing in mind you have to allow for altitude in calculating the temperature at different levels (minus one degree for every 300 feet increased altitude (dry adiabatic lapse rate)) I believe the risk of ice conditions will remain high even by mid day.

More confident riders will no doubt make the ride but as already mentioned - I'm the coward of the county and felt I should commit to an early decision so as not to make your organisation of the event any more of a headache.

Many thanks for your feedback Jim. However, I was out yesterday, riding from Squires and although certain roads were very slippy, giving total respect, adjusting speeds and positioning on the roads should overcome any reason for concern..... HOWEVER, our 1st part of the route will be very challenging due to the particular roads we will be riding on so given the weather forecast of ice and some snow ( as predicted ) I shall cancel the ride or we can change the route to include just A roads.....ie, Starting point as planned then via Holmfirth, woodhead pass onto glossop. I shall look at the conditions ( from my house ) 10.00 am and will do a post relevant to my assumptions.

It's obviously going to be a "call it on the day" decision. As I will be bringing the Mrs. We will be at the start point but discretion will be the order of the day. I will look out for your post Mark and send a Northern Riders text out depending on your call.

Not looking good unfortunately, Jim is showing sense on this one. When the ride was first posted the weather was ideal (for January anyway!) but has dipped considerably. I know we are all aching for a run out but lets be patient. I am driving into Hudds early doors Sunday so will assess and post by 10am regarding me and missus. Have had to use cage last two nights for work and that really naffs me off, I ride 340 days of the year but cut off point for me is 2 degrees or below so sticking to that benchmark helps make these decisions easier..............
