Re: How much do engine rebuilds normally cost?
masterchop, speaking as an ex-tech, I'm pleased to tell you that your engine should go at least another 40k or more before you need any proper spannering. This is dependant on the bike being service regularly. How you ride it is actually less important these days. If you thrash it, or ride it more slowly won't make any real significant difference to longevity. If you thrash it the clutch and belt will wear a bit more quickly as will the variator, but that's it. My own optician had the Quasar engine in the GTS250 and he covered 69,000 in 4 years. Not bad and he never ever put a spanner on the bike. The only attention it got was from his dealer as service times. It looked like a heap of rusting shite at the end of it but the engine still ran ok.
Probably not ugly enough for the 'Ugly Bunch'!

True. Which is why rebuilding an engine is often common in racing.gn2 wrote:To have a 250cc single cylinder engine professionally stripped, inspected and rebuilt with any required new components would probably cost more than a replacement engine.

I wasnt saying it needed a rebuild was just looking at how much it would cost if needed.
Oil consumption is non existant. the level never drops. Dont get any power drops. so guess ok at the moment.
Thanks for all the input though everyone!

@gn2
If masterchop was racing his scooter then yes it could benefit from an engine rebuild eventually as it would have crap loads of modifications to increase speed, etc
As he is not it is pointless doing a rebuild and should just run it then get something else with the money otherwise spent on a rebuild.
I think that was the point

Engine rebuild??? Expensive...(unless you are talking about a 2 stroke moped engine!)
Think about how many hours of skilled labour it would take to strip down and rebuild an engine....I'm not an expert, but I guess the answer isn't going to be less than 5. Then multiply by £50 an hour, plus parts....
As others have said, these days well maintained engines will run run for ever - very few vehicles are ever scrapped cos their engine is worn out!

the main bearings are pressed into the case. it will be cheaper to source a s/h engine. just look after it and it will be good to you
