I read somewhere that last week in the heatwave they had to turn one back on! No wind, so wind turbines not producing anything.capitano wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2020 2:51 pm
I have produced facts on this in the past on here. The UK has a surplus of power generation. So much so that the still-functioning coal fired power stations have been effectively turned off for the best part of a year.
Interesting Electric ???

The Drax coal plant was turned back on for essential maintenance, generated power that was added to the grid during that period, and therefore ended the coal-free run of power generation.

Well, that wasn't what the article said, but I assume you have better info!capitano wrote: Tue Aug 18, 2020 5:46 pm

I do take an active interest in such things.

Thanks!
I was going to include in a Facebook blog post but reading through it's a bit of a non event on a slow news day by the sounds of it.
Gas unable to reach peak levels, combined with a drop in wind and (more significantly) both events happening at the same time as planned maintenance on several power stations.

Re: Interesting Electric ???
I do wonder if its keep it all seeming OK though really.
Obviously with the pandemic and a no deal Brexit looming worryingly, and looking intentional even !!! conisdering the current situation.
Its a shame so many pro brexit !!! even, well heeled types have been allowed to bet so heavily on the UK failing so already rubbing thier hands so they won`t even need to manipulate things to ensure that.
I definately read we are dangerously near the egde electricity production wise in the UK.
We did after all have plenty !!! of PPE in 2020, ahem !!! might of been an idea to have looked !!! or even have bought the masses offered in February !!!
Considering most industry is on a go slow at the moment its likely we are using far less electric overall.
Also we had a very very mild early part of the year in 2020 too.
But I`m pretty sure if there was a sudden surge towards Electric vehicles we would struggle big time, unless we buy in.
Or if there was a sudden unexpected surge !!! of production post berexit we`d need a lot more too. Be nice if we did.
Personally I think battery Electric is a wrong turn down a blind alley. That we could not possibly or ironically environmenatally sustain if a large uptake.
A bit like the rush to Bio fuels that they somehow did not forsee leading to the burning of forests to grow the crops and a large turn from food production in countries to those crops/ fuels causing steeply rising food costs and shortages where least able to be afforded, so a sudden screech to halt almost on those overall.
Though still causing some issue`s re some food oils use this way apparently.

The facts prove differently. What you read was, essentially, simply wrong.XP500FUN wrote: Sun Aug 23, 2020 8:05 am I do wonder if its keep it all seeming OK though really.

Anyone can make a statement but without backing it up, it's just an opinion.
The facts that back up the statement that we are not "dangerously near the edge," of electricity generation in the UK were collected before the current pandemic-influenced situation, and well before this last mild Winter.XP500FUN wrote: Sun Aug 23, 2020 8:05 am

So, no, they are not factors considered.
Any possible "surge towards electric vehicles" would be mitigated by the reduction in power needed to convert crude oils into petrol in refineries.
Many an electric-nay-saying article has ignored the huge electricity demands of refining automotive fuels.

Re: Interesting Electric ???
For me " Battery " based electric still doesn`t make any sense at all.
They are planning to start wreaking havoc mining the sea bed for the precious metals used for batteries and the sea has enough issues already.
Mind you the costs of Hydrogen while that does make sense, are still pretty serious. Jacob Reese Mogg said he expects the UK to take up to 50 years to recover from Brexit so were going to struggle anyway here.
Regarding " Is there enough " well no there isn`t if many of us all plugged in at the same time say after work so with large EV use there will need to be a managed charge system if you will to cope.

Inside EEVs quote Volkswagen - perhaps not the most reliable of sources, but still, the easiest and most recent I found - have said hydrogen compares poorly against battery.
