Re: Silverwing 16,000 mile service
Good grief!! I didn't know how much I must have saved over the years till now. My first Silver wing 600 had 1300mls on it when I bought it. When I part ex it for a new one four years later it had 40,000 mls. I have always done my own servicing. My present Silver wing 600 has just passed 37,000mls. I did the 32,000 ml service a couple of weeks ago. Oil filter seven pounds. Oil about twelve pounds. New drive belt one hundred and ten pounds. Cleaned out drive assembly and reset Dr pulley sliders.Clutch and tappets don't need any attention. Changed brake fluid. I had no idea dealers charged so much.

I live Croydon and have been going to a a small local place for over 15 years now who I trust completely. He is always busy. He has clearly undercharged me at times - I had a TMAX which was a bit of a basket case that he put right - I did get a bit of a telling off for buying it in the first place mind. I first found him on recommendation when I had an intermittent running fault on my helix. I was turned away by a number of garages who weren't prepared to go and investigate, but he stripped it down and found the fault (electrical) and only charged me for the repair, not the diagnosis. That bought my loyalty, which continues to today, especially after having not so great experiences from other garages in the area (just want simple servicing).
I normally write a list and drop the keys through his letterbox leaving the bike there very early in the morning as I take the train to work, pick up on the way home.
Anyway Croydon may be too far but if you do want details pm me. Pretty damn sure cost will be well well under £600.

Yes, these prices are horrific - though it depends on where you are. These are London & SE prices I presume. Even my local (NE England) official Yamaha/Honda dealer 'only' charges £40ph.I've never paid anything like this even for big Tmax services. The other snag is that 'official' parts are stupidly expensive - if you are DiYing, then you have more freedom to find alternatives. For a major Tmax service you can spend £60+ just on filters!Sylar wrote:Good grief!! I didn't know how much I must have saved over the years till now. I had no idea dealers charged so much.

Bloody hell Pete that's a lot of cash for what is quite an easy job.
Ignore the valve clearances like everyone else, everything else is easy provided you've got the basic tools and somewhere to work.
The only special tool you need is something to hold the front pulley while you loosen and tighten the nut. This tool consists of a piece of wood that you drill 3 holes in.
Check out utube for vids on how to do it, and everything else for that matter.
For £800 you can have a long weekend away anywhere in the country where a muppet can help you with the service.
