Hi from Suffolk

Post by Alias »

Hi everybody,

I'm Soph and I'm looking at getting a 400 Burgman. I used to own a 400 about 8 years ago but have been away from anything 2 wheeled since then.

I'm in a bit of a conundrum however, I've found a cheap (£900) bike close to me but it has high miles and a few little niggles. Or the interwebs has other lower mileage examples for between £1600-2200 but they all seem to be 100+ miles away.

I have been and seen the one near me tonight. The guy seemed genuine and appears to have been doing 60 miles a day on dual carriageways and says he hasn't had any major problems. the little niggles however are;
- dust cover on front fork rides up, currently cable-tied in place and he says that the actual seal is fine.
- It has an advisory for rear shock and disc, are these cheap enough to replace?
- The handbrake light stays on (but the brake isn't engaged), not that I ever used the handbrake on my old bike anyway, is this something to worry about or can it be ignored.
- It started first time when we viewed but the second time it was hesitant and took a couple of attempts. The service history showed a new battery about 6 months ago, is this likely to be a bigger underlying problem?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but I've normally found forums to be the best places for help and advice and bow down to your superior knowledge.

Thanks,
Soph

Soph to be honest i would walk away, might seem a good price yet once you have to do the work for next mot etc it wont seem as cheap in the end, especially if you are not versed in DIY (if you are its time and money etc) how much do you want to spend tops... dont worry if a scoot from a dealer is far away they deliver for £99 anywhere, there`s a dealer in welling kent Aye Gee Motorcycles that`s near me and they have changed over to selling more victory and indian brands, i know they have a burg 2008 in silver in there showroom for a year http://www.aye-gee.co.uk/ they had on ebay for a listing at £1800 start but did not sell http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SUZUKI-AN400- ... true&rt=nc
if you were looking then i would give them a ring, arm yourself with written questions , service history of scoot and when last serviced etc, how much to deliver then once got there attention ask how much for scoot +delivered with a service and new mot???? then haggle.

dont buy the first one cos its there, there are better options out there
I cant seem to remember.. I don't know where I'm going, but I'm on my way.

Hi Soph and welcome, can't be much help with your questions but the are many Burgermen on here so someone should be able to help soon. I would agree with michaelphillips about the one you've seen though. The perfect bike for you could come onto the market in a couple of days so have patience and hopefully it will pay you back.

Hi guys,

Thank you for your responses, I've decided to pass on the cheap one, as much as it could turn out to be a bargain, I think there is a little too much risk involved. I'm going to have a look at a couple in Folkestone tomorrow and also check out the one in Welling when they open on Tuesday.

Despite having previously owned a Burgman, are there any common problems to look out for?

I think all the one's I've seen, don't seem to have the hand guards, better back rests, heated grips etc. Are these worth the extra money when buying or can they be retro fitted at lower cost?

Thanks again.

If it's going to need a new rear shock anytime soon I'd leave it well alone - the labour alone on that will be hideous. Burgmans aren't exactly a laugh to DIY on either, even if you are handy with the spanners.

aftermarket items for the burg are easy to get as there are lots around, not sure on common probs, but clutch glaze tends to be one which is easy to cure, the one in welling if its still available would be a good buy , get some gore tex gloves and your hands will be fine. good luck but be thorough in your questions, i always write them down so i dont forget things
