michaelphillips wrote:hi, mine was an easy job as it was just the water pump seal (which the steel shaft goes thr) which needed replacing, on the water pump side, the original was ceramic type, the replacement should be a hardened nylon black type, did not have to change the oil seal side, glad really as this means taking the side casing off as it seats behind,

Sorry to be blunt but you do realise you have to split the whole engine to get at that bearing & seal don't you? It's not that hard a job but it took me 2 days to do an engine rebuild on mine when the oil pump decided to lose all of it's teeth. The bearing & seal are fitted from the piston side meaning it's a complete strip down I'm afraid. How long ago did you buy it NexusInRed? Was it from a dealer?

It's why I didn't bother repairing it, I had already rebuilt the motor once & as I depended on it I just bought another bike.

Hi Michael and Ben

The job is only half complete as unfortunately the new oil seal was missing from my order.

I have removed the old oil seal though, and without having to take the flywheel cover off. It has been possible, with a lot of patience, to extract it by simply removing the pump cover, impeller and water seals.

Here are two photos I took after managing it.

Once the new seals arrives, down the shaft it will go, followed by new water seals, impeller and pump cover o-ring to be thorough. Just a nuisance I didn't have itthis wweekend!

It's just been one thing after another with this Nexus. I'm only carrying out this repair myself as I can't bear another huge garage bill. So far I've spent as much on repairing it as I paid to buy it and have barely ridden 200 miles so far! I really hope once this is fixed that I can actually use it - maybe even enjoy it!

Well done on the repair, it would've been good if you could've had some way of checking the bearing inside because if that's knackered it will also damage the seal over time. When they work they're a superb bike. I still have the same engine but in a different chassis wearing different clothes.

Hi Ben

According to the Piaggio diagrams, the shaft simply has a washer between its base and the inside of the flywheel cover: http://www.easyparts.nl/showdrawing/617 ... ilter.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Let's hope there is nothing else wrong as I'm already cross enough with it as I am!

To answer your question, no I didn't buy it from a dealer. I bought it from a guy last November who said nothing at all about the oil leak. He hadn't owned it long but I guess he suspected it needed a lot spent on it and decided to get rid. Someone definitely knew about the leak though because they'd tried to mask the problem by sticking a screw in the bleed hole! Just wish I'd noticed it. As it broke down with a serious electrical fault not long after I bought it, and only leaked oil when running, it's taken me time to discover the leak. I've owned it five months and it's been out of action more than half of that time, and cost me nearly £1,000 SINCE buying it. I've also spent far more time trying to get it right than actually riding it so far. Maybe once this oil leak is solved I will have a fresh start. Who knows!

You said you had to rebuild your engine after losing the teeth on your oil pump. I'm guessing you had the petrol in the oil problem which so many X9's suffered from. Bummer.

Right, on with my quest to find the right oil seal...

let me know if you cant find an oil seal, as a separate item, when i repaired my water leak i only used part of the kit that came, i have in the shed the oil seal the silver water pump shaft for the mk1 nexus and the washer which i have no use for, so for a couple of quid postage you can have them, private message me if you need to :D

Wow Michael, that's brilliant! Thank you for that offer. Can I ask about the oil seal, is it rubber with a thin spring all the way round the bottom, like the one I removed (link to photo above)?

I've not managed to get through to Sutton or get an answer from Easyparts today and I really want to have the parts in time for the bank holiday weekend. I'll PM you in a bit.
