Asparagus,

You say Burgman or Tmax but did you consider my suggestion to look at the SYM range ?

There are plenty of dealers in London and they are within your price range.

Are you in London or outside London ?

You have mentioned the TMAX and BURGMAN .... I have had a Burgman 250 and currently have a TMAX 500.

I love my TMAX 500 and enjoyed but didn't love my Burgman 250, although I really liked the Burgman 400 !!!!!

I think stepping up from your PCX to the TMAX would bring a smile to your face, you may find it a bit lardy for weaving through London traffic and filtering; don't get me wrong you will love the open road handling and the performance - I do !!!!

As to a Burgman 400, well it may be slightly better at filtering etc than the TMAX and almost as quick in town, it would be a little slower out of town BUT teh TMAX acceleration is intoxicating and in another league.

Which brings me back to the SYMs, the Joyride is slimmer and better suited to filtering and cheaper to buy and probably cheap to run.

Finally another contender is the Honda SH300i which is brilliant for solo use commuting in London - which I have done lots of.

It's your call though and do keep us posted.

SOOTYGULL,

thanks for your replies, and yes i did look at the Sym after your comment. In fact I spent quite a bit of time looking at the Joymax, and I do like it. It seems like a very good scooter and as you say probably better suited to city traffic. I do think 300 could be enough too. I think that the new price is a little steep considering what used bikes you can get for 4.3k, but there is a 2011 model with 4,100 miles on biketrader for 2,795 which seems a good deal, i will try to check that out over the weekend. Especially that the same dealer has a Tmax which I like :) This way I can try both and see how they compare side to side in terms of size.

having said that i am starting to fall for the t-max a bit. just need to test ride a few and see how it feels.

Mr Grumpy and Liam, thanks for all that, very helpful info! Mr Grumpy - interesting about the MK3s being made in Spain. When you say you were a bit dubious of your mk3 - any specific faults/issues you had?

anyway, here are three that i am looking at. what do you think?

and

and
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-XP500- ... 2c6eca576e

are these all MK3 models? Do they seem OK value and anything I should look out for?

black one for me, has extras and looks gorgeous, I had a blue mk3 for 3 years and I miss it badly, rode my husky nuda to Whitby last week with bornagainbiker, I was buffeted all over by the wind, he was cossetted on his burger 650 and didn't have to lug his lid n coat round in the baking heat, I sold my nuda last week and bought an msx125, al never buy another big bike again unless its a scooter or flys like a speeder bike, get the tmax, I found it great in traffic and its fast and handles great and I had 3.5k spent on mods on mine, so eventually it was super fast and looked the dogs bollox!

Well...just an impression to an extent. I did have radiator troubles, and mechanics didn't seem impressed with its condition. Its just that my mk2 still seemed to be going superbly despite being 30,000 miles old and used almost everyday in all the shite weather, whilst the mk3 had a more cossetted life.
